C.G. Cooper is an excellent writer and I strongly recommend anyone who likes military thrillers read all his books. In addition to being a really talented writer, he is a very personable guy and has strong interaction with his readers. If you like this genre you really need to read his "Corps Justice" series books and I suggest you read them in order just to put some context into each book.I'm posting the same review for all his Corps Justice books because I feel very strongly about them and the short shorties he has written to fill in the gaps.
This was a most enjoyable adventure for a short airplane ride. It totally absorbed my attention with rapid onslaught of action, thrills and chills and a political perspective that might be entirely plausible given these interesting times. C.G. Cooper has written in the style reminiscent of Dale Brown, one of my favorites, and yet less convoluted than the style of Tom Clancy. If you are interested in an hour or two of action packed military style thriller, this is a great read. I'm just a touch disappointed in being left with the sense that all military combat experts become some sort of mercenary or that security companies are filled with mercenaries. Neither, of course, is true. But it's a fun read and kept me occupied certainly. I highly recommend it. I note also that C.G. Cooper has an entire cottage industry growing up around his novels and I like the entrepreneurial spirit. Although he makes it available, there was nothing to report to his "grammar police". That's also a great reflection on his entries in this genre and his operation.
I read the 3 book box set first, then Presidential Shift, and I'm loving this series. I'm ready for the next book! Presidential Shift had so many twists and turns in it that I was always surprised about the direction it was taking, and the final twist was in the last few pages and totally unexpected. These books are interesting, fast paced, and have wonderfully developed characters that you begin to really forward to seeing in each novel. It has been a long time since I've read any military type novels, and these are so enjoyable. I barely finish one and am already looking up the next. I get antsy waiting for books to come out in a series, so finding a series that already have a lot of books in them is really a treat. I'm ready to start book 5, and this series already has 13 books in it, so I have a lot to look forward to without waiting, and I think more will be out by the time I get to the last one.
I've now read the first four books of the series, time for my review.Book 2 is better than 1, 3 is better than 2, and 4 is better than 3.On a realism scale of 0-10, these books rate a 1. Mostly unrealistic. The story line here was probably developed when Cooper was in the Corps drinking with his fellow grunts. Marines can do anything--save Mom, apple pie, July 4 and the country--if they are simply unleashed. Super man wears a marine uniform. The books are all plot. There is not a stitch of character development. I guess there's no need to, marines and their gung ho attitudes are all interchangeable. And the author doesn't have a clever way with words, but the prose is succinct and efficient. Read Vince Flynn or Mark Gimenez if you want realism, or character development, or pretty prose.Never-the-less, I've read four of these things. They are quick reads and very entertaining. And I'm ready to start #5. That's got to count for something, n'est ces pas?
At the end of PRIME ASSET, SSI team members had just attended funerals for their men lost in Wyoming and had a couple of drinks in memory of their friends and colleagues... Travis gets a call on his cell phone. Handing the phone to Cal, he says “It’s the President.†...The president wants help from Cal Stokes and SSI to assist him with his plan to clean up Washington D.C. and get rid of corrupt officials and to find and get rid of a leak in his administration...A fast paced thriller, PRESIDENTIAL SHIFT will demand your attention from the beginning right up until the last page has been read. You cannot help but be drawn into the investigation with Cal and the SSI team. There is more than one guilty party in the book, but the BIG reveal will shock you! As always, the book was filled with twists and turns and there were more than a few surprises in store. I could not believe the grand finale (but it was kind of expected)!I am officially hooked on the Corps Justice series and will definitely read other books by Mr. Cooper — I just like the way he tells a story!
I have not read the first 3 in this series. I actually liked the story, however implausible, and liked the characters although they are superficially drawn. Others have complained about a gung-ho attitude or the book being overshadowed by the author's politics. This doesn't bother me, as I'm a huge fan of Vince Flynn and Brad Thor who reveal similar politics. I did like the portrayal of the D.C. political class as self-serving, corrupt monsters, because 98% of them are exactly that. What was bothersome was some very iffy writing, a lack of editing, and a twist at the end that depended on cliches that in this day and age are not realistic at all considering who our enemies really are. The last 1/4 or 1/5 of the book pretty much ruined what had been built up to then, and the last couple of chapters were ridiculous.
This was not as good as I had anticipated...in other words, I had no problem putting it down to do other activities....if I am reading a really great story, I find I can't stop until I've finished....this story just didn't hold my interest until the end & then it just got more confusing...don't care to read any more of the series.
