I have over 6 years of MA experience and I have worked the door at nightclubs and bars and also public security and have been in real physical confrontations, aka fights. This book rings very true and while basic (some will mistake this for superficiality), the insights are deep. The chapter on body areas to target is worth the price of admission alone. He describes what works and what doesn't. This is all very solid advice and I recommend this short book.
The first thing wrong with the book is the title which is misleading. I suspected this when I bought it and I'm confirming it with this review to save others from getting ripped off: meaning expecting to get content implied by the title that isn't there because there is no such thing as a magic bullet or in this case a magic move(s) which in this book is to not be there or simply avoid the possibility of confrontation by any means necessary which is mostly just common sense - nothing magic, special or secret about it. And well, now you basically know the content of the book without reading it. I also have to add that I disagree with the author on occasion and find it alarming that he is claiming a quite a bit of martial arts knowledge without being willing to specify in exactly what styles he has been trained in which from the text is obviously one with a focus on martial arts as a sport (though curiously he also claims to have studied the "reality" stuff which in my opinion if you have to state it's "reality" focused then you should probably be looking somewhere else for training). Perhaps the author is afraid someone like myself will try to verify? I also take issue with the subtitle "Without any Training," as training and practice are essential to absolutely anything a person wishes to do or accomplish. So please no one think you can read this book and be ready to defend yourself. Also, the book contains no page numbers or index and many of the sentences are in paragraphs of their own instead of the paragraph they belong in. Overall, this book, while possibly well intentioned, is executed so poorly I have to wonder if he goes about his martial arts with as much laziness.
Less than 1/3 of this book is about the content of the title. The bulk of this book is basically personal story-telling and "pep talk" for self-defense noobs. Common sense things like "be aware of your surroundings" and junk like that. The title is inaccurate. Even in the last third of the book where it starts to address an actual fight scenario, the comments are "advice" talk, mumbo-jumbo, rather than the "one move" that finishes a fight as advertised on the cover. There is no real fight instruction here. It would be a good book for stay at home moms to read if they can't stop themselves from jogging through the bad part of town at night. There are a few pages towards the end that mention some moves, but really this book should be labeled, "self-defense advice for totally weak noobs with no martial arts training."
More of an inspirational book than an instruction manual. Most of the book is a narrative of the authors opinions, theories and stories. Very little actual combat instruction and most of the advice given is just based on plain-'ole common-sense. Nothing groundbreaking here.
I usually don't give a review and i've never given a negative one before. However, I was so disappointed that I had to warn others to avoid this and find a better book.I have to agree with the other reviewer that said this book is really misleading. The title of this book should have been 'Learn to Run' or perhaps the famous line by Bruce Lee from (Enter the Dragon) "The art of fighting without fighting." The author doesn't state anything new or beyond what's known as common sense and awareness. His main advice is there's no guarantees in life and when you are confronted by an attacker to run! Really?? Heck, I could have wrote this book. I studied boxing and karate from 10-24 years of age and I've fought in tournaments and street fights. About seven years ago I had chased off a hoodie wearing gunmen who robbed my brother, i only had a 3" lock-blade knife.I do agree that people need to develop an awareness of their surroundings and the people that they may encounter on the streets.Every circumstance is different and unique, you can train your mind and body to be prepared for the unexpected. Never underestimate your opponent, learn to act without analysis, trust in your instincts and act very quickly without hesitation! Yes, run if you can, but sometimes you may have to stand and fight, so it all depends on the situation. An attacker is only strong if you allow him/her to feel they have an advantage over you...Turn the tables on your attacker by using the element of surprise and they will run away from you!I can't believe that this is the No 1 Best Selling Martial Arts book on Amazon...
I have been to lots of defense schools - and this is the cliff notes version of most of them - nothing complicated - just practical street knowledge. Buy it and give to your wife, girlfriend or daughters - you will do what you do, this will help you figure it out.
WOW...what a joke! First the title is TOTALLY misleading as he offers many "moves" that are simply natural to most people. His first and foremost is " run". And get away, which is generally common sense. And all the while denouncing the title of the " book" by saying there is no one special move or strike. He claims to be a martial arts expert, but generally po-poos those as ineffective except in theory and practice. All the while in this "book", he pimps the sale of other book, e-book he has written. This "book" is mostly one liners, double spaced.
this was a silly purchase; should have known by the title. you really don't need a whole book to describe "one move", so it goes on and on unnecessarily. wish I could have my money back.
