This book picks up almost right where the last one left off. Ryn is now free and smarting from learning the truth about Tyrrick. I loved how the relationship between Ryn and Tyrrick evolves. I love that Ryn holds her own and doesn't just get over it in a day. There has to be open and honest discussions between the two of them and Ryn has to keep in mind the hell Tyrrick went through too and what it might have done to him. I wanted to smack her a few times when she wasn't yet ready to look at it from his perspective because she was still stuck on how she felt. Then again most 18 year olds struggle seeing the other side when they are hurting. My other favorite relationship in this book was seeing the father/daughter bond between Ryn and Dyter. It is great to see a book portray the importance of that relationship and not just the romance with a male.I so enjoyed seeing Ryn learn about being a Drae and what we learn of the Drae race. On the flip side, I wasn't so thrilled with the Phaetyn prince. I wanted everyone to leave Ryn and Tyrrick alone to explore their feelings and it was clear Kamoi wasn't on the same page as me. Ryn learns that no race or kingdom is a paradise in so long as the emperor is around. Ryn grows and makes her decisions and I cannot wait to see where the next book takes us.
Holy Mistress moons!!! I can't coherently put into words what this book has done to me, but I'm going to try! These ladies surpassed what they did in book 1. I could NOT put this down. There were omg moments, ball your eyes out moments, and wtf moments. This book follows almost directly after the first with maybe a day or two gap. In this book we get see a whole new side to Tyrrik, you know, since the events of the last book happened. And its a side I'm liking, not that I didn't like him in book 1. You also get to see Ryn grow into her new powers and destiny. I love how Raye and Kelly take us on this journey with Ryn and allow us to learn and grow with her.To say the least I loved this book! I am dying for the next one! I suggest, that you clear your schedule to read this because once you start, you won't want to stop.
I fell in love with this series within the first couple chapters of its first book. Thankfully, this one was already out so I was able to keep reading, and the Book God's shined upon me as the newest showed up on my kindle last night, how's that for timing!! This suffered from absolutely no middle book syndrome, it's actually just as good if not a bit better than the first. The world is bleak, scary and in need of its ruler having his ass whooped. I loved Ryns discovery and acceptance of all that was ( dont want to spoil anything) but the fact that it was not instant, and she struggled with everything endeared me more to her. I never can seem to find the right words when I really love a book, they seem to escape me. I really, really, really loved this, like, I'm picking it up every moment I can to have read it. When I can picture the story in my head like a movie playing out and want to shut my eyes in the tense and scary parts, that, for me, is why I read, and the fact I completely can lose myself within it's words and transport myself to be the main character. Bravo awesome authors, I'm off to read your new one and continue the adventure. I do hope the Emperor turns into a tasty snack!!!
I enjoyed the first book in this series, obviously enough to read the second.Cons: -My main issue in both books is Ryn. She was ALWAYS angry about something, constantly throwing tantrums and treating kings and queens disrespectfully. Basically she acted like a spoiled 12 year old the whole time. She was quite self-centered.. I would have loved to see more growth in her as long as other admirable qualities such as compassion, bravery, generosity... but it seemed like she became even more naive and immature since book 1, which I don't get if she is an 18 year old who grew up in a war torn, starving land her whole life. I would think she would be a little tougher and less emotional.-Also I couldn't get passed the way she spoke.. she speaks like a homeschooled teenager from the 21st century, while as everyone else's speech matches the background world. A lot of her inner dialogue was just... unnecessary and cringeworthy.Pros:Loved Tyrrik. Definitely favorite character and worth the read for him lol. Except he was out of it most of the time!It was entertaining, not as good as the first one, and like I said, Ryn will annoy you. But I got through it. Haven't decided if I will read book 3 yet.
I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment of The Darkest Drae series. The main characters are well written and the world they inhabit rich in detail. The narrator continues to charm, with her snarky humor and relatable outlook, so that, even when the fantastical elements and plot twists make the setting surreal, the reader can rely on her to forge ahead in a no nonsense way. I would recommend reading the two Darkest Drae books in order, because much of what forms the heroine's character (including her reluctance to put a label on her love affair/mate bond with Tyrrick and her paralyzing fear of draemen) occurs in book one. Book two builds on that foundation, and the intrigue and suspense increase in an extremely satisfying way. Count me eager for May 2018, when the third book comes out!
Gah! Seriously, these two should never stop writing together. While I love their individual works of art, this series goes above and beyond. The soap queen rises again in this sequel to Blood Oath. As with book 1, Shadow Wings is pretty dark, especially compared to Raye Wagner's previous series, but this one has a little more of the humor and snark Kelly and Raye are known for than the first one did. Ryn is coming into her own and figuring out who her family was. My emotions were all over the place, but I absolutely can't wait for book 3!
