From Booklist
Ross King, author of many works of vivid art history, including Michelangelo & the Pope’s Ceiling (2003), introduces this sumptuous showcase of 976 of the Vatican’s art treasures, observing that “the Vatican has always been a place sacred to the arts,†reaching back to the ancient Romans, for whom this hill overlooking the Tiber was a place of poets and seers, and forward through centuries of church patronage. Five million visitors a year tour this uniquely opulent citadel of art and its 21 museums, from the Pinacoteca (the picture gallery) to the Tapestry Gallery to the Egyptian and Etruscan collections. Now everyone everywhere can experience the Vatican’s magnificent collections in this veritable pageant of art history. Art historian Grebe provides to-the-point commentary, covering various popes’ commissioning of specific works and, beginning in the seventeenth century, avid acquisition of masterpieces. Here are exceptionally fine photographs of the Borgia Apartments, intricate frescoes, rare manuscripts and maps, the glorious Raphael Rooms, and the Collection of Modern Religious Art. An accompanying DVD provides additional portals onto the artistic wonders of the Vatican. --Donna Seaman

This comprehensive and heavy tome illustrates all the works of art on display in the Vatican and underscores the variety of its art, including works that popes commissioned from painters as well as works that were accumulated for art appreciation and prestige beginning in the 17th century. The book is divided into 22 sections representing the museums and areas of the Vatican. This includes the Pinacoteca (painting gallery), with paintings given to or purchased by the pops or removed from altarpieces of papal churches. Also included are images of art from the Borgia Apartments, the famous Raphael Rooms, and Michelangelo?s Sistine Chapel. Lesser-known works are included, such as a collection of modern religious art and tapestry and maps. The diversity of the holdings is highlighted by such collections as the Pio-Clementine Museum of early Christian Rome, the Gregorian Etruscan Museum, which houses non-Western art. Not to be forgotten is St. Peter?s Basilica and Piazz, and its art including Michelangelo?s famous Pieta sculpture.VERDICT This book, which has many beautiful color illustrations, its own slipcover, and a DVD that includes every work of art, will appeal to readers who are interested in the art of the Vatican.

It is great to have a record of all the paintings in the Vatican. The only problem I have is that some of the image quality is not up to par. (Overall the Louvre book has better reproductions but that collection is more accessible.) Several of the Sistine Chapel frescoes are illustrated with images from prior to the restoration that was completed in 1999. In particular the Michelangelo lunettes which are overexposed images of the pre-cleaned frescoes. Also their are a 2-3 heavily pixelated images due to being overly enlarged. Most of the images, and there are almost a thousand, are of good quality. I would recommend Taschen's recent XL book on Michelangelo for a more accurate representation of the Sistine Chapel's frescoes and the "Loggia of Raphael" by Abbeville for the same reason. Glad to have it, but wish the editors dug a little deeper some of the images.
This is a wonderful, ambitious book. It is not a book to be read at one sitting, or really, even 20 sittings. The art work in here can be studied for a long time. The problem is that in order to get all the pieces in, the pictures have to be small. They are not little bitty pictures that you can't see what they are, but there are often more than one to a page. There is also a problem appreciating one with another just as good so close to it. Having said that just to prove that I recognize it is not flawless, it is a fantastic collection. When you consider that nothing gets into a painting unless the artist put it there (unlike a photograph which could have some carelessly tossed item in it) there are hours of consideration on these pages. I am so glad to own it.
My large book promptly arrived and I gasped! The tome itself is like a work my work of art. The DVD is great. I am amazed as to what treasures the Vatican possesses. An incredible collection of the old masters and rooms (like the Borgia rooms) that are too beautiful to be believed. Everything is here, the sculptures, maps, etc. Don't hesitate the book is fantastic. It's right next with my new book on the Louvre and my new wonderful book 'Florence' (this is magnificent!)
I'm actually surprised I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would. It's ok. Some of the paintings are printed so small, I have to get close to the page to see the detail. And I'm actually surprised that this is ALL of the paintings in the Vatican museums... I thought there's be more. Still, it's a well-constructed book... and the nice thing about it is when I got to the Vatican next, I will be able to enjoy the museums at my leisure.
Amazing book, great introduction. I received the book as promised within one day and love it. I wish there were more descriptions for some of the smaller paintings and icons too. The picture quality is great for some but I think some of them are too old and hence don't photograph well. A great 360 of the Vatican, in fact read this and travel.
Beautiful content, however, the binding does not feel like it will hold for very long. That said, I’m still pleased with the purchase
love the book and a good reminder of visit to Rome 2 years ago. The paper quality is not good enough for a book in that price.
Great , great book. Great print quality. But, It cant be all the art they have in there collection.

"An Idiot Abroad: The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington" is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It's an accompaniment to his fantastic television show "An Idiot Abroad" in which Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant get Karl to see the seven wonders of the world in a (sort of) travelogue format for Sky TV. Pilkington is caused massive amounts of grief by Gervais and Merchant who design itineraries and scenarios that Karl has no knowledge of and would never electively choose to participate in. These adventures are frequently punctuated with phone calls, voicemails, or texts from Ricky or Stephen ("Call me. Need to go over the rules of Mexican wrestling with you.")Although perpetually agitated by his tormentors, Karl has a worldview all his own and sometimes even though he hits all the wrong notes he still reveals great truths. The book is almost funnier than the series, and on several occasions I found myself laughing out loud while reading even though I knew the general outline of what was going to happen as I had seen the series previously. If you want a travel book that tells it like it really is or if you simply want to find out why hippos don't get eczema, buy "An Idiot Abroad"!
I can’t get enough of all of Karl’s books, shows, and the Ricky Getvais show! All hilarious. All provoke you to think about how you feel about the various topics, all while you can’t help but find Karl’s thoughts to be ridiculous and yet part genius too. I like books that make you think and laugh out loud. So naturally this book is a must read if you like to think or laugh.
I have watched a few of the TV episodes before and loved them. I was very surprised to find that the book is exactly the same as the shows, it even included the dry but hilarious conversations between Ricky, Stephen and Karl. I think having watched part of the series gave me a better understanding of who Karl is as a person and his attitude, the book might start off a bit confusing without this background.I loved reading about Karl's always eventful trips away, and was ridiculously jealous of the places he got to visited. I thought he gave a comical and one-of-a-kind insight in to each of the places he visited, although I felt that Machu Picchu was a little rushed and didn't have the same level of detail that the others had.I loved reading about Karl's trip to each of the 7 Wonders, and this made me want to visit each of them myself even more. A great read for those who love to travel.
This book goes along with the show, "An Idiot Abroad". The concept is that Ricky Gervais and a friend send Karl Pilkington across the world. They send him specifically to terrible hotels and make him have a terrible time for their own entertainment. The books are Karl's published journals of his trips around the world.I personally would recommend reading the book first, as the show conveys the realistic aspect of it and Karl's hilarious UK sense of humor. There is also a second book called, "The Further Adventures of an Idiot Abroad".Overall, great book.
Getting to read what really goes on in that perfectly spherical head made this book worth every cent and then some! I've had a lot of trouble finding The Moaning of Life to watch as I'm in America and it hasn't been released on U.S. compatible mediums yet but once you watch An Idiot Abroad and read the travel diaries, I highly suggest you pick up his Moaning of Life books to continue soaking in as much Pilkington Magic as possible :)My order arrived on time and in perfect condition. I'd absolutely purchase again!!
I hesitated to buy this book because I couldn't imagine there would be much to add to the series I had seen on TV. But I downloaded it and this is now one of my favorite comedy books of all times. If you love the comedy in the series, by all means get this book. You find out the WHOLE story about his trips around the world. It is truly "laugh out loud" funny! Would love to sit down and talk philosophy with Mr. Pilkington.......
After watching the series years ago, I decided to get the books to see more of his perspective on his travels. This was one of the funniest books I have read. I also bought Happyslapped by a Jellyfish which I loved and Karlology which I have yet to read. I'm sure I'll love it though.
If you have watched the Idiot Abroad series then you will probably have an affection for Karl - his writings (which are really his diaries whilst on his travels) will make you laugh out loud oftentimes and make you wonder about things from a decidedly different perspective. The words seem to fly off the page to the point that when you've reached the end it's a bit of a disappointment to be done with the book. If you want some light reading then do purchase this book - you'll almost hear Karl speaking the words.

Heaven forbid I ever would have to live in something I had built myself, but if I ended up there, this would be a wonderful resource. Get it if you are into prepping.
If only this book would of fell into my hands 30 years ago! I was lucky enough to be raised on 38 acres of land that was partially used for farming. A large portion of this land was just "woods" and it was here where my some of my best childhood memories were formed. The place was literally my playground and I can remember going back in those woods to build forts and pretending to be Daniel Boone. I was never in the Boy Scouts but participated in a very similar program for boys known as the "Royal Rangers" for many years. I've always loved camping and being outdoors and I have continued this interest to the present day. Unfortunately, gone are the days of the fields, farms, and "the woods" for me. Today, my job has taken me away from my childhood home and into the city where I live on a piece of property about the size of a postage stamp. I have a five year old son and I have been determined to give him the opportunity to experience the outdoors by taking him camping. Whenever possible, I still travel back to my childhood home, and it is here that I think this book by D.C. Beard will become a valuable resource of ideas for my son and I.The book was written nearly a 100 years ago by a man who is considered to be one of the founders of The Boy Scouts. The book is very conversational, easy to read, and you feel like the author is speaking to the imaginative child within us all. There aren't a lot of technical details about how to build these "shelters, shacks, and shanties", just enough information, advice, and great illustrations to get you pointed in the right direction. As I am reading this book, I can't help but to think of the ideas and possibilities of how I could start building these things and it really makes me want to rush out and start building my next fort/campsite. It's like my inner child looking at a toy catalog! The book has a lot of good advice too. I can remember being a kid and building my lean-to shelters with my branches just thrown on the top and sides in any way they would lay. Beard gives advice on laying the branches in a way so that water runs off of them easily (ends pointing down). The book is full of facts and practical advice that is really helpful. I had a lot of fun reading through it, making notes all along the way of things that I want to try out when we next venture back home. As my son grows older, I hope to incorporate more of these lessons, ideas, and the enjoyment of the outdoors suggested by D.C. Beard. Just reading the book certainly gets me excited about our annual camping trip to the mountains of North Carolina as well. I look forward to reading some of the other books by this author and I highly recommend this one!
If you ever have the opportunity to build a camp, playhouse, or cabin in the woods, then you should definitely read this book before you start. It has illustrations and examples of every sort of woodland shelter from a single-person brush lean-to to quite elaborate cabins, with simple layouts for the latter. There are also sections on some of the skills necessary to build the examples, such as how to split shakes and shingles and how to store and notch logs for a cabin. He also shows samples of cabins of different regions, historical shacks built by railroad workers and sod farmers, and platform shelters similar to the Seminole chickee suitable for damp or marshy ground. There is even an extensive section on home-made latches and door lock, including a couple of combination locks!
My 13-year-old boy scout asked for this book. After reading bits and pieces for a week or so, he enlisted his brother and some neighborhood boys to go build some "shelters" in the woods down the street. They kept talking about the shelter and I figured it was typical exaggeration. A few of us adults walked down one day to see the shelter -- WOW! It was impressive -- and it stood up to the recent ice storms that left people without power for weeks. All built with branches and saplings in the woods. The book inspired them. It's old school and not politically correct, which makes me like it that much more. Some of the words in there have led to interesting discussions at our house about how words have evolved and how views and attitudes have evolved over the past century.
I purchased this book after JoeRobinetBushcraft , a guy I watch from youtube who does Bush Craft builds, recommended it. I found the information in this book to be really well laid out and easy to understand. If you enjoy any aspect of building wilderness shelters or enjoy camping in a shelter you made then this is the book for you. If nothing else this is a very informative and interesting book to read and I am happy with my purchase of it.
A great read for young and old from an appropriate source, one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America. It comes with instructions on building various shelters each with helpful and fun illustrations. I would say this book is for anyone, specifically younger fans of the outdoors. If you're a camper looking for a helpful guide to stick in your backpack i'd definitely recommend this.Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties: The Classic Guide to Building Wilderness Shelters (Dover Books on Architecture)
This teaches the basic progression of shelter. Which most people don't understand. Your first night in the woods could be sheltered by loe hanging branches under a fir tree. Your second night may give you an idea to build something bigger that may be able to have a fire near enough to warm you and your new home. As things progress we all want some creature comforts and more control over the effects of nature, so we build a more permanent shelter that allows fire to enter the home.
I gave this to my dad as a Father's Day gift because he's said for many years that after he retires he wants to build a mud hut down by the river....well dad perhaps you need this book to help you with your plan.
A great book taken from what I believe are old Boy Scout Manuels. Lots of illustrations and easy to understand. A great book for young scouts or anyone else who wants to make some natural material shelters.

The author of this cookbook is relying on the good work that Dr. Gundry has done to help us all improve our microbiome. This writer must not have totally read or understood what Dr. Gundry's diet plan is all about. Many, if not most, of these recipes DONOT comply with a lectin free diet!!! I am only glad that these two books were so inexpensive, they are not worth returning.Sad to see this author trying to capitalize on Dr. Gundry's name and fine work.
I bought this book along with the book "The Essential Lectin Free Cookbook 2018" by Dr. Monica Ashley. Both of these books have the exact same recipes, with the exact same names in the exact same order. I'm not sure who plagiarized whom or if these authors are related or even the same person, but this type of repackaging to get one to buy the same product twice without realizing it, should be illegal, if it is not already. Very deceptive!
So far I have tried two recipes from this book. The first was Lamb Rogan and the author gave all the ingredients but forgot to tell you that the bay leaves should go in the instant pot with the lamb, just said to take them out in #5. The second recipe was Syrian-Style Shakriyeh-lamb yogurt stew. Again, the author doesn't tell you what to do with the chopped onion so I just put it in the pot with the lamb. The first recipe was good but needed a little heat. I'll find out about the second one later tonight.
Book worth buying for its recipes because they are easy to follow and ingredients are easy to source.I have cooked 2 so far and they were well received.I give it 3 stars because of the way the book is laid out. An index would be helpful and photos too but mostly the index!! I basically have to mark the pages with post-it notes to find my way back to the recipes I like and it is very time consuming. Some reviewers posted that the recipes (some of them) require using lectin type foods but it is OK because the pressure cooker actually neutralizes those lectins.
I am true fan of healthy food and this book contains of amazing recipes of delicious dishes. I am totally sure, that I've already found my favorite ones! Most of the dishes from this book are really easy to prepare. I am grateful to the author.
I really recommend this lectin-free diet recipe cookbook. I learned everything I could absolutely about the diet as well as it was packed with recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. My favorite dinner recipe was the wild shrimp with greens and lemon oil. The shrimp tasted fantastic and it was very satisfying. My favorite dessert was the sea salt pistachio fudge cups. This was quite a remarkable and savory treat after I enjoyed my shrimp. Again, this book is the best hands down and I would recommend it
This book was a eye opener for me because I was clueless about the benefits of limiting Lectin from my diet ..I will definitely try the 14 days Lectin-free diet meal with the easy to follow food recipes..
I have been going through a lot of cookbooks as of late, and there is always a couple of recipes that do not follow the diet.I am not being picky, the last cookbook I looked at had whole wheat toast as an ingredient. Not having to think of substitutions for some of the ingredients is nice.
