Sevek and the Holocaust: The Boy Who Refused to Die is written by Sidney Finkel. It wasn’t until almost 50 years after the Holocaust that he even thought of telling his story. It was only at the instigation of his granddaughter that he told her his story. Much of his story was vague as he was only eight when the war broke out and he didn’t remember many things. Also, some things were a blank because his mind simply blocked those memories. At several times in his book, he quotes others who were there and who remember better than he does. At the end of the War, no one wanted to talk about what happened to the survivors. They just wanted to forget and get on with their lives. So, that is what Sevek did. After he talked to his daughter, his son asked him to group of students. He agreed and was overwhelmed at his reception. He then decided to get his book in print,Sevek was the youngest of five children. He was twelve years younger than his oldest sister and five years younger than his next oldest sibling. Of the five children, three survived, Isaac, Lola, and Sevek. The others in his family and those of his extended family all perished. What was it that made him survive? Was it his age, his looks, his survival skills, his faith, or just plain luck? It definitely wasn’t his age as most children his age were immediately killed. He was told to lie about his age as those younger than 16 were not allowed to live. His looks would not have exempted him as he was not blonde and blue-eyed. He had no skills, just his curiosity and his ability to get himself out of trouble. He did not make up parts of his story instead he quotes from other survivor’s works who were there. He has also visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Buchenwald. He faced his demons so that we could learn from his story and NEVER FORGET. The book is well worth reading.
This is a very good book about basically a very young boys experience of the persecution of Jews, from forced internment in a ghetto to losing loved ones to the Nazi murderers. It also describes his forced internment in a concentration camp and life after liberation. It appears from reading his life story that he has come through all of this horrific trauma as a loving kind human being. I recommend this book to all.
I had such respect for this writer for sharing his feelings with us in such a brutally honest manner. He should be so proud to have survived to see that the evil goals of Hitler failed.
I've read many stories of the Holocaust, but each and every one saddens me that a people could be so persecuted and could be all but obliterated and yet still fight and keep their desire for a life that was being stolen from them.
This boy fought so hard to stay alive while he faced so many heartbreaks and so much cruelty. I'm so glad he has a happy life now with his wife, children and grandchildren. His determination is inspiring.
This memoir of a Polish child surviving 6 years of war, was very heart rendering! How he gained friends, courage, stealth and hardened emotions was truly amazing!!
Wow this story as told in such a way that you knew he had succeeded in the end . He could go on. He could remember his dad with love.
