If you have no other texts on acrylic painting, buy this one. If you have three dozen other books on acrylics, buy this one! The 10 pages on mixing colors alone comprise the most understandable and comprehensive info on this confusing subject I've found, and I must have about a dozen others! (I started this adventure about six months ago and am relying on books for instruction.) The tip on using either baking parchment or tracing paper by the roll, instead of buying the prepared "membrane layer" product for moist storage of your palette, is probably worth the price of the book! And if you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to. And did you know that you can buy baking parchment at the grocery store? My husband already HAD a roll, but not any more! I thought I'd have to find a commercial kitchen supply store. Also, it turns out that chamois leather is a better substitute for blotting paper, as well as "kitchen sponge cloth", but I don't know what that is. My husband runs our kitchen. There's also a short chapter on watercolor and gouache (sounds like squash, I'm told), and how to use acrylics for the same effect. Also a few pages on framing and reproductions and copyrights and some other stuff. Read the chapter descriptions under the picture of the book and then buy it; you'll like it!

There is so little on acrylic painting and none I have found that is as comprehensive as Acrylic Secrets by Gil Barron. Since it is also a Reader's Digest book, I have always found their books stuffed full of all kinds of ticks and techniques as well a clear and concise directions. I learned how to knit and do needlework with their books and I also have a huge one on watercolor. This one I am in the midst of reading and find it very informative and a simple guide to follow and use for someone more used to drawing than painting. Barron takes you through the basics, touching on anything and everything imaginable in acrylic painting. I'm looking forward to using this book when I start doing acrylic painting once again. I would recommend this to beginners or anyone just wanting to brush up on their acrylic painting skills.

Very well-illustrated and informational book. Not only does the book contain techniques for a variety of painting methods using acrylics (oil, watercolor, etc.), but much advice regarding equipment, tools, etc. is provided. Ten demonstrations by a variety of artists, including Gill, are included to illustrate the theory presented. Gill's book contains a wealth of information, very beautifully presented. An excellent reference!

I have been painting with watercolor for awhile now but am new to acrylics, so I bought a few resource books from Amazon to help me learn how. This is an excellent one! I am just starting, but can see already how valuable this will be. It has lots of projects designed to teach all the basics, and also more complicated techniques. It is well illustrated and well organized. I am excited about this purchase!

Great book for beginning or experienced painters. So much info that you can go back to and keep learning again and again.

I'm an art instructor and I love this book. It gives a wide range of ideas and quick effects for the new acrylic painter. I use many of these ideas with my acrylic students, but this book would work equally well for self instrucrtion. Lots of fun here.

While these tidbits are available all over the blogs, introductory sections of some books and magazine articles, it is helpful to have them handily available. I had to create my own notes to index into the various tips/techniques for there is information overload.

While this had some good ideas, I saw nothing that I hadn't read about before. I think the book is, definitely, overrated. I am glad I did get it MUCH cheaper than what the prices are now. If anyone pays more than $15 for this book, I feel they will be disappointed.
