Words fail me to express my disappoint in the book I received today. I had anticipated a "work of art" coffee-table book, but instead was sent a clumsy, poorly-made imitation of the original. I ordered this book after viewing it from my local library. THAT book was sublime, elegant, finely made with photo-quality paper and had fine touches, such as Japanese liner paper in front and back. THAT book also was larger in size. It was a first edition printed in Japan. The book I received was printed in the USA by Echo Point Books & Media. It has the look and feel of a bargain reprint - dull, thin paper that feels of recycle, flimsy construction in the binding, smaller and more difficult to read print to accommodate the smaller sized format.I am familiar with quality. I gladly paid the asking price for the book I requested - the book I had seen and found beautiful. The book I received is shoddy and belongs in a $5.00 close-out bin. Buyer Beware!

The other reviewers are right; this book is a work of art. But unlike many books that are elegant (and this definitely is elegant), it also has lots of good tips in addition to explaining the thinking/spirit behind designs. Anyone considering creating a Japanese garden or who just wants to absorb some of the aesthetics of a simple but elegant and intriguing look, should get this book. It has plenty of beautiful spreads to choose from as well as practical details about how to make your own inspired garden. Straight forward advice, without being simplistic.

This book is itself a work of art, the best I've ever seen in the field. The photographs convey the quiet, peaceful, beauty of small Zen gardens so well, that it is a joy to look at. Mr. Cali's text clearly introduces and explains both the historical background and the philosophical/aesthetic concepts behind Zen gardens. The traditional techniques to create your own garden space, large or small, are explained clearly enough to give anyone the confidence to create even a tiny oasis of natural peace within their home environment. This is best book on zen gardens to come out in a long time. Highly recommended.

I ended up buying a number of books on this subject when I decided to create a zen garden in my backyard. This was my favorite, and it provided a number of ideas. It also is a good source of providing instructions on how to do it yourself. I also liked the modern twist on traditional gardens that were featured in here.
