The premise is fascinating for art history lovers. A prominent artist attacks a canvas in the National Gallery. Why? A psychiatrist attempts to solve the mystery. Sounds interesting, right?After a third of the book, the characters are so reprehensible, so self-involved, so unlikable that I struggled to finish. The psychiatrist throws proper professional ethics out the window and even begins a affair with his patient's lover!. The artist's mistress, besides being a self-absorbed, immature twit (waxing eloquent as she stares at herself naked in the mirror repeatedly) utters some of the worst dialogue this side of a Harlequin novel. UGH!Then there is the artist whose wife and kids are afterthoughts to his own needs and wants. Periodically he might mention them as if they are plants that need periodic watering or pets he wished he could leave at the kennel. "Yes, I have children". That is it. He begins an affair with the above mentioned mistress only to have her finally identify his complete lack of empathy for anyone or anything save for a mystery woman. All else if flotsam and jetsam to him. I found that I felt a real dislike for this group.The only real human is the artist's former wife who struggled through his moody navel gazing and lack of hygiene. She stands alone raising her children, even proving financial support for her ex-husband's care.When the mystery to his attack is revealed it is more of a "uh-huh" moment than a "ah-hah" moment. Enjoyed The Historian, but this is a real slog with characters that make you cringe.

I wanted to give Swan Thieves book 5 stars but I'm afraid I can only give it 3 in good faith. It has a number of wonderful features but also a number of flaws. It's the story about a psychiatrist (I happen to be married to a psychiatrist) who is also an artist. This psychiatrist has an fascinating artist/patient who refuses to speak to him. This patient is shrouded in mystery.This book chronicles Dr.Andrew Marlow's journey to discover the secrets behind his patient's obstinate silence in order to help him recover. It leads to the patient's ex-wife and her story, to the patient's lover and her story, and finally to the story of a 19 Century Impressionist painter. The author moves us by chapter from points-of-view (with just one point-of-view violation) and from time periods--the relative present to the 1870's during the time of Manet, Monet and the other French Impressionists in Paris.If you love art or if you are an artist, you will enjoy Swan Thieves. It is full of art and the passion that drives great art. The author describes colors, movement and perspective like a true artist (I wonder if she is).The story is also about love and about treachery. It isn't a mystery because the reader has clearly figured out everything long before the end. I do not believe the author intended to write a mystery although she dishes out bits at a time. Indeed, there are no surprises and no twists and turns. It is a simple story told in a unique way.Those are all the reasons I wanted to give this book 5 stars. Unfortunately here are the reason I had to drop two of those stars.First, although the main character acknowledges he is violating psychiatric practice, he really goes way beyond what would be considered psychiatrically ethical. No psychiatrist would travel the world and interview family and friends of a patient. Nor would he or she become involved with those family members or friends. Without spoiling the ending, I'll just say that the hurried way the patient suddenly responded left me in doubt. For this reason, although my husband is a great art lover and collector, I worry about recommending this book to him. If you are not a psychiatrist or if you can suspend disbelief, then, by all means, read this book.Second, there is a lot of redundancy in the story. How many times and in how many ways do we need to know that Olivier is old? I really got very tired of hearing about his withered hand or lips or yellow teeth. Geez.Third, the book could have ended much sooner. There were descriptions and backstory that were unnecessary to the story. I criticized Goldfinch for the same thing. This book is not as bad as Goldfinch but it still had me skimming a lot.Fourth, the characters are very alike. It was hard to distinguish Mary from Kate or even from Marlow. Even the 19th Century character sounded like the modern woman.Nonetheless, the writing is beautiful. Here's an example: "Under his face she sees the younger man he must once have been and this young man gazes back at her as if through a mask..."If you love art, can tolerate some redundancy, appreciate the history of art, and can ignore or don't care about the abuses of psychiatry, then this book is for you.

In Elizabeth Kostova’s, The Swan Thieves, the main protagonist, a psychiatrist named Marlow who provides care for patients in an expensive private mental institution, makes decisions about one particular patient’s care that breach professional and ethical boundaries in ways that set my teeth on edge. Marlow was so obsessed with his patient, Robert Oliver (a charismatic and wildly talented artist), that I frequently wondered if Marlow should not only be drummed out of his profession, but be admitted to the institution as a patient himself. That said, Kostova’s writing is so elegant, and her characters are so interesting, that I read and enjoyed every page of this very ambitious and beautiful book. The scenes that talk about and depict art from the artist’s perspective are vivid and almost tactile. Kostova is a remarkable writer who uses descriptive restraint to powerful effect. I loved this book.

This long novel has a memorable opening; a painter attempts to attack a nineteenth century painting in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. The narrator is the psychiatrist who tries to unravel why the attack took place. This leads to my first reservation; novels in which a leading character is behaving irrationally are difficult to pull off, and I don’t think Elizabeth Kostova quite does it. Early in the novel, we are brought into a second narrative which takes place in the nineteenth century, and which eventually explains the artist’s obsessions. But my major issue is that this second narrative is inserted and not sufficiently explained for the reader to engage. All is revealed in the final pages but it is a long wait. The plotting and characters are quite interesting, but the reader needs to plough through a lot of words to understand the relevance of all the elements in this novel.

I LOVE this book. From the first two pages of the introduction, I was absolutely absorbed by it. This book captures your attention completely. The author seamlessly writes parallel stories. She describes characters, feelings and places and you feel you are there, you are one of them. I just wish I did not know that the same author wrote "The Historian". Both books are excellent but The Historian was the first I read and I cannot help but comparing styles and narratives. I recommend both and hope the author will release other books of the same quality.
