Can't say enough positive things about any book by Professor Ehrman, though many church-going people would find this book - or any of Ehrman's books - offensive, the fact is such people are unlikely to read any of his books. Textual criticism is the name of the science that investigates the origin and authenticity of texts, and Ehrman is excellent at this. He's head of the Religious Studies Department at my alma mater, UNC, Chapel Hill, and he formerly taught at Rutgers, another alma mater of mine. Bottom Line: most people live their lives with the religious education of a twelve year old and are not susceptible to new information. This book is for the intellectually curious, whether church-goer or not.

Ehrman provides a clear and strongly argued polemic on what Biblical scholars believe are forgeries in the New Testament, why they think so, and why other texts are not. He goes further to provide some possible explanations around why these texts would be forgeries, how they were forged, and what is meant by "forgery" (to intentionally mislead or deceive rather than simply plagiarize, use another's name, or misattribute work). Understandably for some this is inflammatory - maybe even heretical (lit. "wrong thinking") stuff.Ehrman is writing for the lay reader, although for those interested, he does provide notes referencing the scholarship used to support - and in some instances, challenge - his inferences. This is certainly a strength of the book and a clear indication that Ehrman asks readers to approach the topic with an open mind. What I found more interesting than the forgeries themselves was his exploration of why early Christian authors would intentionally seek to mislead readers. His answer points to the rich and complicated history of the early Church and the many competing factions and interpretations among early believers of what it means to be a "Christian" and what someone must believe (and/or do) to claim membership.I give it four stars because inspite of his incisive analysis, Erhman gets a little repetitive in his writing, particularly in the concluding chapters. Some tighter editing would have addressed this. That being said, the repetition doesn't get in the way of the larger position Ehrman takes. It really makes for some interesting reading.

If you've ever wondered how the writings of the various Apostles who lived in a fairly backward country not known for the literacy of it's population, and whose Gospels, etc. appear in the New Testament could have survived the centuries, you're on the right track. Author Bart D. Ehrman, a Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina tells a fascinating and very necessary story of how very little related to Jesus and the original Apostles survived the First Century AD. Forensic analysis of the language in a few letters that can reliably be attributed to Peter and, especially, to Paul were then used as a basis for speculative telling of the life and teachings of Jesus by writers in the Third Century. Writers in succeeding centuries took these and embroidered them further, reflecting on legends, current teachings, misinterpretations, etc. until what emerged bore little relation to to anything provable about the life and works of Jesus. It is a fascinating story, told well enough, with documentation explained and supposition exposed which, unfortunately at times bogs down in the minutia of research. But if you have an open mind and any stake in Christianity, Professor Ehrman's book should be of great interest.William Fregosi

I have been privileged to have taken several courses by Professor Ehrman. He is accurate, articulate and well documented. While so many people author books with an intent to sway readers to their opinion and stretch their "facts" to make points, Prof. Ehrman does not do this. He makes no apologies for the facts that the New Testament was canonized under a political pressure cooker to unite the people under the Papal Empire. He also makes no wild and fantastical magical claims that the New Testament religion of Christianity was formed in an Orthodoxy box either. He deals with the subject honestly and with clarity.

This is a fairly well-sourced non-fiction book about "forgery" in ecclesial literature. By forgery, the author means that an unknown writer authors his/her own book to a well-know/-respected writer. Examples of this process are written pieces attributed to Peter or Paul but not written by them. Subtypes of literary subterfuge are also discussed. The book is presented as a work that an educated layperson can comprehend and offers alternative explanations around some canonical and non-canonical works. Recommended for those interested in ecclesial history, literary history, and cultural history.

One of my favorite authors. Clear, concise and interesting without being overbearing. Mainstream theology that digs deeper and with a scholar's sense of language and archeological evidence.

He makes a powerful case for why the Gospels and some of the Pauline writings are not written by whom it is claimed to have written them. The book is well referenced, but it does feel like he pushes his premises to the limit of acceptability. An example in point is he appears dismissive of the possibility of scribes writing at the behest of the Apostles/disciples, or the possibility of schools of thought and traditions in the name of the Apostle. Sometimes it does feel like he pushes his premises to the limit of acceptability.. Otherwise he raises interesting and thought provoking questions with reasonable resolutions. Most of the examples are interesting and thought provoking and his reasoning is carefully crafted and tied together in a thoughtful, yet determined point of view.
