I read this second book in the Bernovem Chronicles after reading the first. Yes, the first was that good!!Kristina and the kids are a bit older than they were in book 1. After returning to our world, life became somewhat normal again. Well, as normal as life can get after you've met gnomes, dwarf, fairies, and your dream prince. Now, I hate to be judgmental, but I know how Kristina must have felt when she suddenly finds herself pulled into Bernovem again with the same kids who annoyed her the first time: Davina Pave (now 17, but acting like a 12-year-old), Hester Crumfield who has only grown more annoying, and Graham Kepler, perhaps the dumbest of them all. This book delves more deeply into the feeling the now older Kristina has for Prince Werrien. This time around, Kristina will discover that being the "Chosen One" may be a curse instead of a blessing.Kids who have never felt they "measure-up" will love these books! They are perfect for middle-grade and up readers. Who doesn't love a book that takes us back in time to a place where we all believed in fairies?
Kristina is returning to the magical land of Bernovem in “The Shard (The Bernovem Chronicles Book 2).†A few years have passed since the events of “The Warble (The Bernovem Chronicles Book 1).†Kristina doubts her memories of her experiences in Bernovem a few years earlier. Joined by Hester and Davina, she is transported back to Bernovem where she is reunited with Prince Werrien.Victoria Simcox’s style of writing is reminiscent of J.K. Rowling, but her voice and the saga she gives voice to are all her own. She gives each character their own unique stamp, their own identity. Kristina is full of wonder. Hester and Davina are mischievous, but each are mischievous in their own, unique way. Prince Werrien is, of course, the charmer.Bernovem is a colorful, vibrant land filled with talking animals, gnomes and fairies. Wonders abound in this magical land. One never knows what is waiting just around the bend.Whether a child or a child at heart, this series of fantasy tales will win you over!
Second in the Bernovem Chronicles series, THE SHARD takes us back into the mind and wonderful adventures of twelve-year-old Kristina Kingsly.Summer camp isn't working out very well for Kristina so she returns to the magical world Bernovem and all her talking animal and fairytale friends. Also she is reunited with Prince Werrien. But the “Black Shardâ€, a seeing stone, creates some unexpected problems, ignites a perilous journey, and unleashes a ghostly hag. Sentiz, Hester and Davina are other characters the reader will loathe.Having read the first in the series "The Warble," my anticipation was high. Victoria Simcox's follow-up with this book, THE SHARD, is nothing short of fantastic. I love this book. As with all great children adventure story-books, it is packed with lessons about life and friendship.Genuinely an enjoyable read! I think it will be treasured classic among children and adults alike.
Kristina returns to Bernovem and continues her adventure in the magical land. While I find the writing superb and the characters wonderfully imagined, this story was not quite as good as the first book in the series, The Warble. Although, I still think it is an excellent tale for children. The author continues a solid storytelling style that children will love, and I still enjoyed reading this book very much. There is less action and adventure in The Shard, the story focusing more on the growing relationship of Kristina and Prince Werrien, though there are subltle hints about things throughout that are easily missed. As a personal preference, I tend to enjoy action more, but this was still a fun read.As with The Warble, I can easily see reading this story to a child and envision the fascination on their faces as it is read aloud. It is the perfect kind of story of magic, fairies, gnomes, dwarves and other fantasy creatures that is just plain fun to read. I'm giving this 4 stars, as it seemed a bit slow to me, but that is a personal preference. The writing and story are solidly executed and portrayed. The real surprise comes in the last quarter of the story, when things really start happening, and I have to say it ended far too soon, and I'm now anxious to read the next book in the series. The last part was very exciting.
